Old-Fashioned Vanilla Ice Cream

Yield: 2 quarts

2 quarts cream
1-½ cups sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla
Rock salt and ice

Set up the ice cream maker according to manufacturer's directions. Pour the cream, sugar, and vanilla into the container, and place the container into the ice cream bucket. Fill the out-side bucket with ice and rock salt. Alternate the ice and rock salt to cover the outside of the inside container holding the cream, sugar, and vanilla. Allow to stand for 3-5 minutes before turning slowly. Give the residents a chance to turn the handle. The staff may have to finish turning the handle. Some facilities have electric ice cream makers. The hand-turned ice cream maker becomes quite a conversation piece.

After the ice cream gets started play music and sing while people help make ice cream. I played songs with references to farm animals, frogs, and worms. Serve ice cream with coffee at the end of the program.
